Krka National Park was a day trip from Split, a couple of hours up the coast.
The park is built around the Krka river, which tumbles down through a series of waterfalls before widening into a broad, impossibly clear lake. We took a cruise on teh lake stopping at an old monastry briefly.
The main falls at Skradinski Buk are the centrepiece. A network of wooden walkways threads between the cascades, over rushing channels, and around the edges of the pools. The water is a milky turquoise-green, coloured by the minerals in the travertine, and so clear in the shallower sections that you can see every stone on the bottom.
The wildlife here was remarkable. We saw grey herons cormorants perched in the reeds and along the banks.
It’s the kind of place that earns its reputation completely. Two hours from Split, and a world away from everything.
